Criteria for a "good" attorney

While reading the civil unrest story, I realized we don't have an attorney for our family.

How do you find a good attorney? What criteria do you use?

(I'd first use him/her to get our wills written up).

Thanks for any help.

Remember that YOU are interviewing THEM for a job. Do not let them 'charge' you for any initial 'consultation'. Any guy worth his salt will meet with you to discuss possible work without tagging you for a fee. The ones that believe they have to ding you financially just to deign to talk to you are seriously overrating their own importance.

Talk to the attorney. Find out where they stand on the spectrum of liberty and where the world is at this point in time. Even if they are not 'fully awake', having one that is at least aware would be a boon.

Or

For wills and such, just go to LegalZoom.com and save yourself a ton of money.

Very difficult task, indeed....Referents or word of mouth is perhaps the best for selecting a lawyer...

If one is practicing in more than one state maybe a indication of a highly qualified individual...

Your local law magazine or others may have ranked the best of the best, as it is done hear in the Twin Cities...

Minnesota Law & Politics
Mpls& St Paul Magazine
Twin Cities Business Monthly

My favorite is to ax another lawyer...

BTW, a simply will requires no attorney at all...

I realize we can do a will without an attorney, I just thought that would be a quick way to establish something of a relationship prior to SHTF.

Good question. I've had to avail myself of legal representation on a few occasions, never was impressed by any of them, selection was on a word of mouth basis. Lawyer shopping ain't easy. As in anything, DYODD.

I've had similar experiences with lawyers. Most of the ones I've used I wasn't impressed with.

The good one I used acted like he didn't have time for my little problem. I thought he came off as being an a**hole which is why I went to him in the first place. I always thought that I wouldn't want to go up against him in court.

Once I had to hire a criminal defense attorney. I chose the one that was always in the local paper. He always had the top cases and he always won. He wasn't cheap but we won. After that I ask his advice for an attorney with another specialty.

I've required legal counsel on a few occasions. I have never been disappointed. One lawyer was personally invested in me as a family and church friend. The other was discovered through a network related specifically to his specialty. I can see how it can be a crap shoot but I also can see how finding the right lawyer is dead simple.
